One of Iowa’s newest laws is designed to counteract a growing and under-reported crime in Iowa and across the nation.
AARP officials said more elderly people are falling victim to the illegal use of their income or assets. Those charged with helping them manager their money are increasing stealing it.
National studies show this kind of financial exploitation of seniors is affecting one of every six adults over the age of 65.
Speakers at the news conference said women are twice as likely as men to be the victims, especially those who live alone and require assistance with health care or other activities of daily living.
The new law to help combat the crime was passed by the legislature this year.
It give families and others new ways to challenge those who are made power of attorney when they suspect there is a problem.
