  • Global Insurance Symposium to Feature Powerhouse Industry Leaders

May 20, 2014 by Market Wired

DES MOINES, IA–(Marketwired – May 06, 2014) – The inaugural Global Insurance Symposium, being held in Des Moines on May 20-22, 2014, will feature global insurance leader keynoters addressing trends impacting the industry globally, including changing regulations in the international insurance marketplace that are impacting U.S. companies.

    Keynote presenters are:

Michael McRaith, Director, Federal Insurance Office

McRaith was appointed by U.S. Department of the Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to serve as Director of the Federal Insurance Office (FIO) in June 2011. As Director of FIO, McRaith advises the Secretary on domestic and prudential international insurance matters of importance. FIO monitors all aspects of the insurance sector, including access to affordable insurance for traditionally underserved communities and consumers, minorities and low- and moderate-income persons. McRaith also serves as a non-voting member of the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC). Director McRaith is responsible for coordination of Federal efforts and the development of Federal policy on prudential aspects of international insurance matters. As FIO Director, McRaith represents the United States at the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and in other bi-lateral and multi-lateral international insurance matters. McRaith also serves on the IAIS Executive Committee and as Chair of the IAIS Technical Committee.

Naruki Mori, Assistant Commissioner for International Affairs, Japan Financial Services Agency

Mori was appointed Assistant Commissioner for International Affairs at the Financial Services Agency (FSA) of Japan in July 2012. He is responsible for coordinating policies on insurance regulation and supervision related to international affairs at the FSA, the integrated supervisory authority for the financial industry and market in Japan. He serves as Vice Chair of the IAIS Executive Committee, and represents the FSA in other international meetings, including the Joint Forum Plenary, where cross-sectoral and market issues in finance are examined.

Senator Ben Nelson, CEO, National Association of Insurance Commissioners

Senator Nelson became Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in January 2013. Prior to this appointment Senator Nelson served two terms in the U.S. Senate, representing Nebraska from 2001-2013. During his tenure, he earned a reputation as a moderate who was adept at bringing his colleagues on both sides of the aisle together to find compromises on some of the biggest issues facing the country.

Serving on the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Nelson’s priorities began with safeguarding the nation’s food and fuel security. He was also a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and served on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

T.S. Vijayan, Chairman, India Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority

Vijayan became Chairman of Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India in February 2013. He has played a key role in various initiatives for enhancing insurance awareness and making insurance affordable to all sections of the population. He has also taken various measures for optimum utilization of technology in the insurance space. These initiatives include launching Insurance Repository System in India which enables issuance and maintenance of insurance covers in electronic mode — utilizing the existing Customer Service Centre (CSC) network to market specified insurance products so that this wide network of government promoted IT enabled community centers can be leveraged to take insurance services to every corner of the country.

Vijayan represents the Asian region on the Executive Committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and is a member of its Technical and Implementation Committees.

The Global Insurance Symposium will also feature renowned panel speakers such as Michael Kehr, Michael Hood, Governor Tim Pawlenty, and Mike Millette; as well as numerous opportunities for attendees to participate in roundtable and breakout discussion sessions with global insurance leaders. A full schedule of the event can be viewed at http://globalinsurancesymposium.com/index.php/schedule.

The event is presented by The Greater Des Moines Partnership, Iowa Economic Development Authority and Iowa Insurance Division. Registration is $495 at www.globalinsurancesymposium.com.
