New Year Brings Changes To Insurance Commissioner Roster

WASHINGTON – Pennsylvania’s insurance commissioner and president-elect of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Michael Consedine, said he will step down from his state post in order to allow incoming Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf to name his own commissioner. Consedine assumed the title of president-elect of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) on Nov. 19, 2014. He previously hadserved the NAIC as vice president andsecretary-treasurer.
Consedine will serve as NAIC president-elect until Jan. 20. A NAIC spokesperson said a special election will be held in early February to choose his replacement.
A new year will bring new insurance commissioners to a number of states.
South Dakota, Wyoming and Maryland have named new insurance commissioners.
In South Dakota, Larry Deiter was named insurance commissioner Jan. 8 by Marcia Hultman, secretary of the State Department of Labor and Regulation. Deiter had been serving as interim director since Dec. 4, when Merle Scheiber resigned. He has been with the South Dakota Insurance Department since 2012.
In Wyoming, Paul Thomas Glause was appointed insurance commissioner by Gov. Matt Mead. He took office Jan. 3. He lives in Cheyenne, is a former county prosecutor for Weston County and served as municipal judge in Rock Springs.
In Maryland, Al Redmer Jr. was named insurance commissioner by Gov.-elect Larry Hogan. Redmer is managing member of Redmer Insurance Group and owner of Redmer Financial Group. In addition, Redmer is the former state House minority whip and served as insurance commissioner of Maryland from 2003 to 2005. He formerly served as CEO of Coventry Health Care of Delaware. He succeeds Therese Goldsmith, who served for four years.
