  • ‘The One Thing’

    March 5, 2019 by Wink's RockStars

A few years ago, we came across an article, “I Wish I Knew Then: 6 Power Women Share Most Valuable Career Advice” by Moria Forbes. The article has today’s successful female leaders sharing key insights into their careers. A question was asked to six top female leaders, identified as successful, about ‘The One Thing’ they had wished they had known when starting their career.  At Wink, we are fortunate to be under the leadership of the successful Chief Storyteller and CEO, Sheryl J. Moore and took the opportunity to pose the same question to her.

Sheryl is one of today’s most dynamic thinkers and ‘doers’ in the insurance business. Moira had written, “we can draw on the life lessons of others to enhance our growth or simply help us manage all that we’re looking to accomplish each and every day” in her article.  The Wink team feels that our careers are enhanced and empowered under Sheryl’s exceptional leadership. A first impression of Sheryl for most would be “Wow, this lady can take over the world!” Okay, perhaps just our insurance competitive intelligence world.

As we know, not only does corporate America lacks few CEOs who are female; women are also vastly underrepresented in the financial industry.  Sheryl, who was once an impoverished single mom of three babies (all in diapers!), decided over ten years ago to leave the assumed dead end of the corporate ranks and run with an idea which turned into becoming the CEO behind our successful competitive intelligence and market research company.  Sheryl broke through barriers of the male-dominated financial industry, became the foremost authority in indexed products, known as “Indexed Rock Star” and today is an incredible force and champion of the annuity and life insurance industries.

People who are identified as successful have usually accomplished many things. This road to “success” can lead to overextending oneself. At one time, we knew a Sheryl who was constantly busy and rushing around to do just one more thing on her road to success. Now, after over 10 years of entrepreneurial experience and countless after hours spent working, Sheryl responds to “What’s ‘The One Thing’ you wish you had known while starting out in your career?”

“I wish I had known that running a business shouldn’t consume your life, even if you love what you do. Now that my oldest son has passed, I never have the chance to get those endless evening hours spent in the office back.” – Sheryl J. Moore, Founder & CEO of Wink, Inc. and Moore Market Intelligence.

Sheryl has instilled her values in Wink. We are a close-knit family (almost as crazy as a real family) that is united with a passion for life. Wink’s Chief Everything Officer, Victoria has been Sheryl’s partner-in-crime throughout her entire entrepreneurial journey. Victoria observes, “We are blessed with one of the most knowledgeable and accomplished leaders in this business. Sheryl Moore is more than just a boss, she is a mentor and friend. And we are so proud of the woman she is!  Seeing Sheryl happy and accomplishing a new normal of work-life balance is so incredible.”

This month is  Women’s History Month – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. Use this month as an opportunity to ask a “power woman” in your life, whether a mentor, boss, admired leader or exceptional volunteer, for the “The One Thing” about life or career that she thinks you should know to keep moving ahead in your own life.

I wish I had known that running a business shouldn’t consume your life, even if you love what you do. Now that my son has passed, I never have the chance to get those endless evening hours spent in the office back.
