North Carolina GOP Chairman Faces Charges Related to Insurance Regulation
April 2, 2019 by Erik Larson
The chairman of North Carolina’s Republican party was indicted alongside the founder of an investment firm for allegedly participating in a scheme to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to sway decisions at the state’s insurance regulator.
Robin Hayes and the others made their initial court appearances Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge David Keesler in Charlotte, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s Office.
Hayes “steadfastly denies the allegations” and looks forward to clearing his name, his lawyer, Kearns Davis, said in a statement. Davis said Hayes has a “long and distinguished career in public service” and “volunteered his time helping to support the party.”
Also charged are North Carolina entrepreneur Greg Lindberg, the founder and chairman of the Durham-based investment firm Eli Global LLC and owner of Global Bankers Insurance Group; John Gray, a consultant for Lindberg; and Eli Global executive John Palermo.
